The Red Sunset Maple, Acer rubrum, is considered one of the best trees for early fall color. This is a large deciduous tree that has pyramidal form when young becoming rounded with age.

It has strong wood and is a vigorous, fast-grower, when mature, they will be 40 to 50 feet tall and 25 to 40 feet wide. Partial Shade to Full Sun Summer Green Leaves Fall Red Leaves that last for several weeks. Growth Rate 13 to 24 inches per year.

The leaves retain an attractive high gloss throughout the growing season and pale green beneath, 3 to 5 lobed and 3 to 6" across. Species name of rubrum (meaning red) is everywhere in evidence. The newly merging red flowers in dense clusters and fruits signal that spring has come in late March to early April, red fruit (reddish two-winged samara), reddish stems and twigs, with outstanding orange to red fall color. The seeds are quite popular with squirrels and birds.
